Switzerland, Co-Op, £10.00
Hats off to the Co-Op for venturing into unknown territory with the launch of a relatively rare swiss red, as an addition to their premium ‘Irresistible’ range. From the warmer Valais region in the south-west, it’s made from the Pinot Noir, and the little known Gamaret grapes. Ruby red, with a lightish, soft, ripe fruit style; juicy and vibrant, with lots of bright cherry and blackberry fruit, hints of rose, a twist of black pepper and a sprinkling of cinnamon. Gentle, rounded, silky and supple. Next summer, chill it a little, but right now, it’s a deliciously lively red to suit warming autumn dishes. I tried it with a warming chicken and mushroom pasta bake, but would work with roast duck, wild mushroom risotto, and mild curries.
